About the Department
The Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering in Monmouth's School of Science is dedicated to the use of engineering methods in the design and development of products and systems in which software is a major component.
Programs in our Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering offer integrated curricula that prepare students for graduate studies or for immediate employment. The concentration in Advanced Computing is recommended for students who plan to specialize in scientific computing or who want to consider pursuing a graduate degree in computer science. The concentration in Applied Computing gives students flexibility to earn a minor degree in a field other than science or mathematics, such as business administration, criminal justice, communication or political science.
Both the Bachelor of Computer Science with a Concentration in Advanced Computing and the Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering are accredited by ABET.
The computer science programs at Monmouth provide a good balance between theory and practice. Students are given a firm foundation in the fundamentals of computing so that they can adapt to future developments in the field. Yet they are given enough practical skills to qualify for employment immediately after graduation. Currently, all of our graduates are receiving multiple jobs offers.
Monmouth University is recognized in the industry as one of the first educational institutions to acknowledge the strategic importance of software engineering. In 1986, the University developed one of the nation's first graduate programs dedicated to the discipline. In 1995, Monmouth created the first software engineering department in the United States, and it is currently one of only twenty-two universities in the United States with an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree program in software engineering and the only one in NJ.
